ADJACENTPOSSIBLE_
A LONG DISTANCE IMPROVISATION ENSEMBLE
The adjacent possible is a kind of shadow future, hovering on the edges of the present state of things, a map of all the ways in which the present can reinvent itself… [the adjacent possible] captures both the limits and the creative potential of change and innovation.
— Steven Johnson (Smith, 2010)
adjacentpossible_ is a long-distance improvisation ensemble comprised of interdisciplinary artists from across the country. Each month one member offers the group a prompt that they use to engage and create small improvisational works that can be shared through Instagram. They use this platform to generate posts that explore new ways of putting their moving, thinking, and making in dialogue. The project was initiated by Marie Lynn Haas and Emily Climer in January of 2021 as a way to continue growing their improvisation practice in a period of continued social distancing.
